How to Hang Your Art Collection?
by Maria Hipwell Creative Director for ArtAbsolutely.com and Founder of AParkBench.co.uk
You have done the hard bit and found yourself the perfect combination of artworks for your interior. But where do you start planning a gallery wall?
It’s not as daunting as it seems; your judgement and taste is as good as any. Remember you are the one looking at it every day.
Organising artwork in traditional grid using decorative molding walls. Artworks are ‘Helen’ (top left), ‘Fish Hoek’ (bottom left), ‘Kommetjie’ (top centre), ‘Frank’ (bottom centre), ‘Serenity Bay’ (top right), 'Nefertiti' (bottom right), ‘Harbour Point’ (bottom right left).
There are many hanging tips and techniques online, explaining how to prepare and hang (templates, laser beams, level apps, nails, no nails etc) but the fun part is all in the arrangement. Start on the floor with a tape and define the boundary line of the exact space. Your collection could be same size frames, a family of mono prints or a diverse mix of art. My clients’ collections are usually found pieces from antique fairs and auction houses- different styles, mediums and varied, eclectic, historical frames. Admittedly, slightly harder to curate, but the end-result will be far more striking and aesthetically pleasing.
'Chase’ (left top), colour customised ‘Star Gazer’ (left bottom), ‘Pink Rain’ (centre), ‘Destination’ (top right), 'Tide II' (bottom left).
Lay your pieces, starting in the middle moving outwards, I find the bigger pieces on the right tend to help with the overall balance. This technique gives you space down the line, to add any future artworks you acquire.
Subconsciously, you may have created a collection designed in a classic, traditional grid with a base line or top line, a random patchwork of organised chaos or salon-style hanging, organic and free flowing. Feel free to play around until you find some harmony.
Salon Hangs experimenting with placing artworks closer to the edges of walls. Wall by the window: ‘XXX’ (top left), colour customised ‘Game I & Game II’ (top right), colour customised ‘Dream’ (centre), ‘Maverick’ (bottom left), ‘Selkie’ (bottom right). Wall behind chair: ‘Crowded’ (bottom left), colour customised ‘XXX’ (top left), ‘Autumn’ (right).
Then get on a chair and photograph from above, this will give you a good indication of what it will look like on the wall as a visual piece. Don’t be afraid to start again and re-arrange, or even sleep on it. You are creating a masterpiece after all.
